SISD: Student at Socorro Middle had handgun in backpack

A student at Socorro Middle School allegedly had a handgun inside his backpack, a spokesperson with the Socorro Independent School District confirmed.

A parent called ABC-7 to say he received a phone call from the district with a message stating the student was in custody and would be “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

An SISD spokesman told ABC-7 police were notified by students.

The school was not put on lockdown, the spokesman said. The student will be charged with a single count of “possession of a firearm in a prohibited place,” the district said.
