Federal Agency: Dump truck in I-10 wreck has history of violations

Police say 10 vehicles were involved in a “chain reaction” crash after the driver of a dump truck lost control of his vehicle.

The wreck happened April 19, 2018 on 1100 block of Transmountain. It led to the closure of the westbound lanes on I-10 in between Artcraft and Transmountain during the afternoon rush hour.

The investigation revealed 47-year-old Martin Alcala, the driver of a dump truck, “jumped from the moving vehicle,” shortly after losing control of the vehicle, police said.

The driverless dump truck continued west on the loop and went on to strike six other vehicles, police said. “The dump truck crashed through barriers and went off the over-pass onto I-10 west and struck three other vehicles,” on the freeway lanes below, police said.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the dump truck has a series of violations dating back to 2016, including three in 2018. In the past two years, the In N Out Transportation-owned truck has had violations that include excessive weight and out-of-service brakes.

Some of the drivers involved in Thursday’s wreck suffered minor injuries, “but none were believed to be life-threatening injuries,” police added. Alcala was transported to University Medical Center. Police said investigators do not know why Alcala lost control of the vehicle.
