New Mexico State’s third chancellor wants school to be “a player on the global stage”

The third candidate for the position of New Mexico State University’s chancellor addressed the public on Monday.

Dr. Brian Stevenson is the former president and vice-chancellor of Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada. Of Mexican and Canadian descent, the candidate has familiarity with both borders.

“Our community is a borderland community,” Stevenson said.

He said he looks forward to living and working in an area where he can connect with such a vibrant culture.

“I have a real understanding of what it’s like to be Hispanic, not only through the language, but through the culture,” Stevenson said.

The candidate arrived on Sunday. The university will host him until Tuesday.

He wants New Mexico State to expand its reach on the international scale.

“I want to make NMSU a player on the global stage and allow it to be recognized and celebrated,” he said.

The candidate told ABC-7 his specialty is business and foreign relations.

Stevenson is one of five chancellor candidates currently being courted by the university.
