Burges basketball star Jawaun Newton signs with Evansville
Burges basketball star Jawaun Newton will continue his career at the Division One level after signing with Evansville Friday afternoon.
Jawaun, alongside his younger brother Tristen Newton, helped lead Burges to great heights during his career, including a trip to the Elite 8 in 2017.
Jawaun, a senior, said he is relieved that the signing is over with so he can look forward to improving his game before playing college ball.
“It’s just a relief that I can finally say it’s over with and get prepared for college,” he said. “I can get bigger, stronger, faster, everywhere I can improve. So, whatever I can do, I’m going to do it.”
Newton was joined by friends, family, and teammates at Burges Friday for the ceremony.
Evansville is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, which is also home to last season’s Final Four darling, Loyola-Chicago.
Newton said it was an easy decision to head to Evansville after his visit.
“They showed me that they really wanted me, and it seemed like a family place. So, it felt like the perfect fit for me,” he said.
