State track and field medal winners: Friday, May 11th

Hanks track star Michael Abeyta stole the show at the state track and field meet in Austin on Friday.

The sophomore sensation captured three medals (one gold, two silver) after a grueling schedule on day one of the meet.

Abeyta grabbed the silver in the 5A 3200 early in the morning, just missing out on gold after a late push by Aledo’s Graydon Morris.

He would then secure gold in the 800 final later in the afternoon, using a strong kick to pull away from the field.

Abeyta then completed his day with a silver in the 1600 in the evening. He now has two medals in that event in his career after capturing gold last year in the 1600.

In total, the Hanks star had to run 5600 meters on the day.

Elsewhere in Class 5A, Eastlake’s Emilio Rios took home a silver medal in the high jump.

San Eli found success in the boys 4A 3200 final. Edwin Gomez, already a state champ in cross country, added a gold in that event.

Meanwhile, Chris Mar-Yuen of Mayfield had a stellar day at the state meet in New Mexico. He grabbed a silver in the 6A long jump while adding a bronze in the high jump to his tally.
