Field is set for 2018 WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational

The field is now set for the 57th Annual WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational set to take place Dec. 21-22.

The annual basketball tournament will welcome East Tennessee State, Norfolk State, and Wyoming in addition to the Miners this upcoming season at the Don Haskins Center.

Matchups have not yet been set.

ETSU will be making its first appearance in the tournament, Wyoming its second, and Norfolk State its third. ETSU and Wyoming both finished with top-100 RPIs a season ago (92 and 98, respectively).

“This tournament has become a tradition and the history of teams and players that have come through El Paso is tremendous,” Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “Our basketball committee, which is led by Barry Kobren, continues to seek out and work towards bringing quality teams to the Don Haskins Center and El Paso.”

UTEP has played in each tournament since it began in 1961, but the Miners have struggled in recent years.

The Miners fell in the tournament final last season against North Dakota State by a final of 63-51. The year before that, they lost their opener against Maryland Eastern Shore before also falling to UC Irvine in the consolation game. They were also unable to win the tournament during the 2015-16 season.

In fact, the Miners have not won their home holiday tournament since 2014.
