Texas low on list of safest states

June is National Safety Month and it seems Texas is not very safe.

According to a new list made by WalletHub.com, the Lone Star State is ranked number 47 out of the 50 states for safety. New Mexico is ranked number 33. The top slot went to Vermont.

In order to determine the safest states in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states in five different categories, including personal and residential safety, emergency preparedness, and safety when it comes to finances, the workplace and roads.

They also took into account any tragedies the country has recently experienced, including mass shooting and natural disasters.

According to the website, in 2017, four hurricanes struck the U.S., killing over 100 people and affecting Texas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico.

Louisiana led the U.S. in the homicide rate, averaging 11.8 per 100,000 people.
