Socorro Police: Truck Driver rear-ended after he pulled over to ‘observe truck fire’

I-10 East has been reopened near Clint after a crash involving several vehicles tied up traffic for hours in Far East El Paso County.

ABC-7 crews saw at least two 18-wheelers involved in the crash. One of them was hauling soda and water bottles. The other semi was reduced to mangled metal and had to be flipped upright.

The crash was first reported around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. An official with Socorro Police told ABC-7 a semi truck heading west caught fire. The driver stopped and exited the truck to detach the the cabin from the trailer.

At that same time, a second truck driver heading east on I-10 pulled over to “observe” the fire, Socorro Police said.

A third truck driver, also heading east on I-10, rear-ended the second semi truck on the side of the road observing the fire, Socorro Police added.

Police told ABC-7 one person was hospitalized, but could not confirm if that person was one of the truck drivers involved in the wreck.
