Sons chase man who allegedly burglarized mother’s SUV, hold suspect until police arrive

Police say a boy and his teenaged brother held the man suspected of burglariding their mother’s vehicle until police officers arrived.

Investigators learned the owner of the Toyota FJ Cruiser was inside her home Saturday evening when her 7-year-old son noticed a man going through her vehicle.

The boy alerted his 17-year-old brother, and both ran after the suspect south toward Amador Avenue. The mother followed her sons and the suspect in her SUV.

The suspect ran to a nearby Valero Corner Store, where the 17-year-old took him into custody with the help of others at the gas station.

Investigators learned Mark Renteria, 30, of the 1100 block of Montana Avenue, is the suspect of burglarizing the vehicle.

Renteria allegedly stole cash and the woman’s cell phone from inside her unlocked vehicle. The cell phone was recovered.

Renteria was charged with one count of burglary of a vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. He was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.
