Woman accused of attacking police…

Police arrested a Las Cruces woman accused of injuring three officers checking on her welfare Saturday evening.

Candy Luna Santana, 31, of the 1200 block of north Mesquite Street, is charged with four counts of battery upon a peace officer.

At about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 7th, police officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check on a woman sleeping near the entrance of the Valero gas station at 3101 N. Main St.

When officers arrived, they found Santana asleep. Officers woke Santana and asked a few questions regarding her state. Police said Santana allegedly became angry and grabbed one of the officers around the neck, scratching him. She also spit in the officer’s face, police said.

Officers attempted to take Santana into custody, but she allegedly kicked a sergeant and head-butted a third officer who responded to the scene.

Santana was taken into custody and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where she is initially being held without bond.

The officers were not seriously injured during the scuffle, police said.
