New Mexico State immortalizes “Pistol Pete” with bronze sculpture

New Mexico State University immortalized the school’s mascot, “Pistol Pete” with a bronze sculpture on a university bench.

“I think it’s good for the school,” said Caden Kirkpatrick, a senior. “We’re going to bring social media alive with this.

The life-size sculpture is modeled after Pistol Pete student mascot Caleb Gustin.

“I think it’s really cool,” said Natale Castellini. “I didn’t expect him to be life-size.”

The sculpture is placed right outside the university’s Corbett Center. According to NMSU, the inspiration came from Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, Texas, which has a statue of that school’s mascot, the Horned Frog.

“He’s really cool and I think it’s a great place for people to come and take pictures,” Castellini said.
