Sweet Play of the Week: El Paso H.S. wins for incredible diving catch

An El Paso High School duo teamed up to help their squad win this week’s edition of “Sweet Play of the Week,” sponsored by Southwest University.

Quarterback Zach Rodriguez launched a deep pass to wide receiver David Gonzalez in the team’s victory against Bel Air last week.

It initially appeared the ball might sail just beyond the reach of Gonzalez, but he put his body on the line diving for the ball and somehow managed to reel it in for a huge gain. Even Rodriguez said he was a bit surprised it ended up as a completion.

“Yeah, definitely. It looked like it had gone a little bit too far,” said Rodriguez. “I didn’t know what was really gonna happen with it. And David was just able to make an amazing play on the ball.”

It appeared as if Gonzalez jumped from ten-yard line and landed around the three or four. When asked if he remembered jumping that far, Gonzalez said it was all a blur.

“No, I don’t remember most of the play honestly,” he said. “I just remember the ball being almost overthrown. Then, as soon as I saw it, I was like, ‘Maybe I could catch it.’ And I just dove for it and made the play.”

That play helped the Tigers take down the Highlanders by a final of 35-21. El Paso improved to 2-1 overall with the win ahead of this week’s matchup against Hanks.

Though the team has had to deal with some injuries this year, they know they’re headed in the right direction.

“Just keep us healthy and keep focused in every game,” said Gonzalez. “We need our players back. That’s all.”
