Sweet Play of the Week: Coronado’s Garrett Slaughter cuts back for TD

Coronado running back Garrett Slaughter will do whatever it takes to get in the end zone, no matter how far he has to run.

Slaughter ran all over the field Friday against Eastlake to win Sweet Play of the Week, cutting back and breaking tackles to reach paydirt.

“You know, my offensive coordinator, he lets me be an athlete,” said Slaughter. “And on that play I was an athlete and just made the most of what I had.”

Although Slaughter got the credit for the touchdown, he passed that credit along to his teammates.

“It was a toss sweep to the left,” said Slaughter. “My receiver, David Lemaster, he was blocking downfield really well. And my pullers, Jake Cox, my O-line, guys like [James] Apsey, [Jack] Niland, they all made their blocks.”

After beating Eastlake 31-0 to improve to 3-1, the T-Birds now have a matchup against Canutillo to prepare for. Slaughter issued a bold prediction Wednesday.

“We’re coming out with the win, nothing less,” he said.
