Las Cruces welcomes George Lopez, Edward James Olmos in new movie

The team producing “Walking with Herb” is inviting members of the public to be extras in the new movie, working alongside actors like George Lopez and Edward James Olmos.

“Come out and be extras,” said Joe Bullock, who wrote the book that inspired the movie. “We need lots of extras running out in the scenes!”

The movie is about a man inspired by God to do the impossible.

The crew will be shooting at the Red Hawk Golf Club in northeast Las Cruces this Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“The community of Las Cruces has been so warm and supportive,” said Ross Marks, the film’s director. “The actors are extraordinary.”

As ABC-7 reported in August, the screenplay for the film was written by Tony-winner Mark Medoff. Marks told ABC-7 this could be one of the largest independently produced films in New Mexico.

“I want to bring film to Las Cruces and grow film in Las Cruces,” Marks said. “There’s no better way to grow film in Las Cruces than to actually make a movie here.”

There are a total of 65 crew members, with 25 of them from the Las Cruces area.

“I think this is a great opportunity for Las Cruces to see the movie magic,” said Johnny Palomarez Jr., the stand-in for George Lopez. “This is really great seeing all these talented actors here in New Mexico.”

“For me, it’s about following and pursuing a passion,” said Jayce McCormick, another local actor. “New Mexico has a longstanding tradition of film.”

The crew will film Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m to 6:30 p.m. at Red Hawk Golf Club, Marks said. Background actors are directed to park in the dirt lot and head over to the big white tent to sign in. They will raffle off some prizes and have food and drink for the background actors.
