Franklin shuts out Coronado Thursday while Mayfield, Americas also win

Coronado 0, Franklin 44 Final

It was supposed to be a competitive battle between the two 6A west side schools, but Franklin absolutely left no doubt as to who is the better team Thursday at the Sun Bowl. The Cougars dominated from start to finish en route to a 44-0 statement win against the Thunderbirds. Franklin is now 2-0 in district play after Thursday’s showcase. Coronado is now 0-2 in district play with a loss against Montwood as well. Franklin appears to be in great position to make a run at the district title this year.

Socorro 14, Americas 42 Final

The Socorro Bulldogs coughed up a couple costly fumbles in the opening minutes of the game, allowing Americas to jump out to a quick 14-0 lead. Americas quarterback Jaime de la Cruz was explosive on the ground and through the air. He connected with Julian Hinojos on two incredible touchdown passes early on to give his team a cushion that they would never relinquish. Americas picked up its first district win after falling last week in their district opener against Franklin. They’ve got an important matchup a week from now against Pebble Hills.

Gadsden 0, Mayfield 27 Final

Mayfield put on another strong defensive performance this week in a shutout victory over Gadsden. The Trojans held undefeated Centennial to just 13 points last week but fell in a game that was slowed down due to rain. The Trojans are now 3-1 in district play so far this year and have five total wins – not bad for a team that was 2-8 a season ago. Aaron Thompson looked unstoppable early on carrying the ball for Mayfield, as his team rolled to its third win in their last four games. Mayfield closes out the regular season with games against Hobbs and Las Cruces High School.
