O’Rourke holds final rally before Election Day in El Paso

U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D) often touts the fact that he’s visited all 254 counties during his campaign.

On the eve of Election Day, O’Rourke was in El Paso County, speaking to a crowd of hundreds at UTEP.

“I feel really good about the campaign that we’re running,” O’Rourke said. “We will need to see the kind of voter turnout that we witnessed in Texas over the 12 days of early voting.”

O’Rourke spoke to a packed house at Magoffin Auditorium. He said the community of El Paso should be leading the way when it comes to immigration reform.

“W e have seen multiple migrants coming to this country, asylum seekers for 242 years,” O’Rourke said. “This community defines the positive story of immigration, from Chihuahuita, to Segundo Barrio to sunset heights where we live. W e are a city of immigrants.”

O’Rourke did not specifically answer ABC-7’s question about how he would handle the issue of the caravan of Central American migrants coming toward the United States, if elected senator.

“We will continue to do what we have always done. Be a nation of immigrants, of refugees, of asylum seekers. The greatest nation the world has ever known,” O’Rourke said.

A poll released by Emerson College last week has O’Rourke trailing incumbent Senator Ted Cruz by three points. Cruz held a rally in Pearland, Texas a suburb of his hometown of Houston.

“This election comes down to three single issues: jobs, freedom and security,” Cruz said. “When it comes to immigration, what do Texans want? We want to build the wall.”

O’Rourke hardly mentioned Cruz on Monday night.

“I haven’t had time to pay attention to the junior senator’s campaign. We’ve been focused on visiting every county. Listening to everyone, being with everyone,” O’Rourke said.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
