UTEP Basketball getting ready to start season

The UTEP Miner Basketball team plays the University of Texas Permian Basin tomorrow to start the season.

In that game they will have only one senior…. on the whole team, Paul Thomas.

The Miners though have been getting their hands dirty. Coach Terry’s blue collar attitude keeps UTEP focused on the task at hand.

Returning only two starters from last year, Kobe Magee and the aforementioned Paul Thomas… coach and his staff have a young squad to get prepared.

Something different though, is that the miners will be wearing their names on the back of the jerseys now. That makes Thomas’s parents happy.

I spoke with coach earlier in the day and their two leaders after practice.

Paul Thomas said, “My parents are definitely a big fan of that but I like it, it’s a big change. Its something Ive been looking forward to since Ive been here. I think it will give the players a little more sense of pride.”

A focused Kobe Magee seems ready to get the season started saying, “Everyone is just excited you know. Were gonna give it all we got, play hard and just get after it. First game at the Don so were ready!”

With just hours before the beginning of the season coach Rodney Terry exclaimed “Well anytime you get to embark on a new season there is always a level of excitement for your guys. We’ve had a chance to have a ton of practices. We’ve had a chance couple of good scrimmages so now they count for real.”
