Boys Basketball: Burges beats Coronado Tuesday night, 73-56

The Burges and Coronado boys basketball teams squared off Tuesday night in an early-season showcase at Burges High School.

Coronado jumped out to a quick 15-7 lead over the Mustangs, but Burges star Tristen Newton would lead a comeback that eventually saw the Mustangs pull away for a 73-56 win.

The Thunderbirds lost both matchups to the Mustangs a year ago, and seemed like they might be on their way to redemption Tuesday night, when the Mustangs found another gear.

Newton and Darryan Taylor formed a solid one-two punch for the Mustangs, who have had a number of top players graduate in recent years including Deion Bauman and Tristen’s brother, Jawuan Newton.

It is still early in the season. After all, both schools have football teams that are still playing. But Burges appears to be on the way to another successful season.

The Mustangs are just two years removed from an appearance in the Elite Eight that saw them nearly advance to state before they fell 65-62 to Justin Northwest.
