Teacher killed in hit-and-run on Thanksgiving to be honored

The Ysleta Independent School District is inviting students and employees to honor a teacher who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Thanksgiving.

Amanda Ferguson Weyant was a teacher at Eastwood Heights Elementary.

On Monday, YISD tweeted a picture of Weyant decked out in a beanie and jersey from the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. The tweet said, “Mandy was a huge Green Bay Packers fan, so we are asking the community so we are asking our community to honor her love of life by wearing green and yellow in her memory.”

El Paso police have said that Weyant was crossing North Mesa Street and Cincinnati Avenue when she was hit and killed by a driver who left the scene.

The driver reportedly abandoned the car a mile from the crash.

But police arrested Joel Velazquez, 24, and charged him with accident involving death.
