Two Americas High School star baseball players sign letters of intent

Darrel Hernaiz and Erick Martinez from Americas High School signed their letters of intent today. Hernaiz will be going to Texas Tech and his best friend Erick Martinez will play for New Mexico Junior College.

Along with going to Texas Tech, the talented shortstop is projected to be drafted by a Major League team within the first ten rounds of the 2019 draft.

Hernaiz, who has lettered three times, was a District 1-6A All Academic player and an All-District and All-City Shortstop in 2018. He is the second Texas Tech baseball player to be signed from Americas in recent years along with Orlando Garcia, who was drafted by the Giants.

When asked about the talent coming from the Americas baseball team Hernaiz said, “It’s amazing. I believe it’s the best program in the city, personally. It’s helped me grow as a player and as a person. I appreciate it. A lot goes out to Coach Munoz, and I appreciate him for that.”

Erick Martinez, who signed with New Mexico Junior College, is also an All Academic player with All-district and All-City honors. Martinez was also asked what he thought about Coach Munoz and his ability to produce top talent.

“It feels amazing, you know,” said Martinez. “Just coming out of this school, this school has a good reputation. And just to be able to be another one of those types of guys, you know, that goes out and does what they love, it’s a really good achievement.”
