Visit El Paso to deliver hundreds of tamales to Texas capital

Representatives with Visit El Paso are making the trip to Austin for their 15th annual Tamal Drop.

With support from Southwest Airlines, two members of the convention development team took off to Austin Wednesday to deliver tamales locally sourced from La Tapatia, winner of the El Paso Times Best Tamale Contest.

The tamal is a staple in Mexican Christmas cuisine and Visit El Paso says it’s a token to perfectly represent the Sun City in the state capital.

“For the Convention Development Department, there isn’t a better Mexican dish that personifies the type of detailed, quality service and unrivaled hospitality that you’ll find in El Paso,” Visit El Paso said in a press release.

Nearly 7,000 tamales have been delivered to Austin in the event’s history and like years past more than 700 freshly-made tamales will be hand delivered Wednesday to associations like the Texas Hospital Association, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas.

“Sure it’s quite an undertaking to haul such a large quantity of tamales a few hundred miles across the state but we really feel it demonstrates just how far our team is willing to go and the high level of concierge service people can expect from the destination,” Brooke Underwood, Assistant General Manager for Visit El Paso, said in a press release. “They’ve also become quite the coveted holiday treat amongst planners.”
