Secretary of Homeland Security set to visit borderland

The Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen is planning a visit to the border Friday amid two migrant deaths in Border Patrol Custody.

In December, two migrant children have died in BP custody. The first death was 7-year-old Jakelin Caal, who was apprehended at the Antelope Wells Port of Entry and was later transported to an El Paso hospital.

The agency was heavily criticized for not reporting Caal’s death to congress for several days.

A few weeks later on Christmas Eve, Felipe Alonzo-Gomez died at an Alamogordo hospital after he and he father detained for 6 days. They were transferred to Alamogordo because of overcrowding in El Paso.

The Border Patrol has since implemented new policies including welfare checks on all migrant children under the age of 10.

The agency will also work on improving housing options for migrants and expediting emergency medical care for migrants who are sick.

It is unclear what part of the Neilsen is planning on visiting.

The new media is not invited to attend.
