NMSU to open Pete’s Patio, first-ever bar on campus

New Mexico State University is set to open its first on-campus bar and restaurant in April.

Pete’s Patio is located in the atrium at the Corbett’s Center Student Union, next to Taos restaurant.

Sitting at Taos enjoying his lunch with a friend, Joe Limon told ABC-7, “Before, when they didn’t have that, it was empty all the time. So, I think it will be a great place.”

Courtney Beck, the executive director of activities for NMSU, said Pete’s Place has been in the works for about four years.

“I think the biggest issue was the idea of having a bar/pub/grill on campus,” Beck said. “Now, you don’t have to worry about pedestrians crossing the street to other bars. You’re not having to worry about drunk drivers. It’s all right here locally on campus.”

Sitting across from Limon with a view of Pete’s Patio, Gabrielle Carrillo told ABC-7 he has some concerns. “I don’t really like it because I’m not really sure how they’re going to monitor it,” said Carillo, “How will they stop alcoholic behavior from coming on campus?”

Piper Coalson, with the Wellness Alcohol Violence Education Program on campus, echoed the same concern. “Corbett is historically where students come to study. We know there’s a huge correlation between alcohol density and crime rates going up, sexual assaults, domestic violence, just assault in general,” said Coalson.

Coalson told ABC-7 she is also concerned with underage drinking and possible over-serving at the bar.

Beck told ABC-7 bartenders and servers, trained to serve alcohol, will be checking all identifications at the bar.

Pete’s Patio has already has its first soft opening last week where students got the chance to taste the flavors of craft beer brewed locally. Only drinks were served to patrons because the restaurant portion won’t be ready until April 1, 2019.

Its next opening is Thursday with karaoke. After the grand opening in April, Pete’s Patio will only open after classes at 5 p.m.
