Safety measures in place for President Trump’s visit

A historic day for El Paso as the city prepares to welcome the President of the United States Donald Trump for his first visit to the Sun City.

President Trump will host a Make America Great Again rally at the El Paso County Coliseum at 7 p.m.

The top priority for law enforcement agencies is to keep the president safe while at the same time keeping the community safe.

Border security and Trump’s proposed border wall will likely be at the top of his agenda during Monday night’s visit.

On Sunday night’s ABC-7 Xtra, Sgt. Ron Martin, president of the El Paso Municipal Police Officer’s Association said safety protocols are in place.

While Martin could not go into detail about Monday’s security, Trump’s safety is their “ultimate concern.”

“When the Pope came to Juarez, we had a large security detail on our side of the border blocking off streets and issues like that,” Martin said.

The same can be expected today.

Residents can expect street closures through out the day and leading up to Trump’s arrival.

The Bridge of the Americas Port of Entry will close for about an hour when Trump arrives to El Paso and as he departs from the Coliseum.

“Have some patience, it is a very important visit to El Paso. The president does not normally come to El Paso. So we need to take that serious and his safety and the safety of the citizens is our paramount concern,” Martin said.

Gates at the County Coliseum will open at 3 p.m. and Trump’s rally begins at 7 p.m.

Former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke will also host a rally at 7 p.m

The event will begin with a march at 5 p.m. from Bowie High School to the Chalio Acosta Sports Center at 4321 Delta Dr., located just outside the coliseum.
