Las Cruces boys, Mayfield girls win district tournament titles
The boys and girls District 3-5A tournament title games are in the books, and the favorites have emerged victorious.
The Las Cruces boys basketball team defeated Oñate by a final of 50-43 at Las Cruces High School Friday night to capture the tournament title and remain perfect on the season.
The Bulldawgs will enter the state playoffs now with a record of 28-0.
After the game, Las Cruces head coach William Benjamin said he was proud of his team but also thinks Oñate has the ability to make a run in the postseason.
“Yeah, I mean it’s a great opportunity to get better going into the state tournament. Our kids did a tremendous job. I thought Oñate gave us a great look. Their defensive schemes were great. Oñate is a very good team, and they’re going to go down there and make some noise.”
Meanwhile, the Mayfield girls team also won the 3-5A title on their home court, defeating Alamogordo 45-26.
The Trojans were 12-0 in district in the regular season before cementing their dominance with Friday’s victory.
They’ll enter the state tournament with an overall mark of 23-5.
Seedings for the playoffs are expected to be announced on Sunday.
