Men’s Basketball: NMSU holds off UTRGV to advance to WAC Final

The New Mexico State men’s basketball team is headed to the WAC Championship Game after defeating UT Rio Grande Valley Friday night in the semifinals by a final of 79-72.

Terrell Brown scored 19 points to lead the Aggies while A.J. Harris (15 points) and Clayton Henry (12 points) also reached double figures in scoring.

The Aggies have now won 18 consecutive games and improved to 29-4 overall on the year.

The win Friday also gave the Aggies a new program record for wins in a single season. The previous record of 28 had been achieved in both 2016-17 and 2017-18.

NMSU will face Grand Canyon in the WAC Final Saturday at 8 p.m. MT on ESPNU in a rematch of last year’s title game.

The Aggies won that contest, 72-58, to deny Grand Canyon their first appearance ever in the NCAA Tournament.

NMSU will look to continue its hot shooting when it matters most. The Aggies connected on 11 threes in Friday’s win and have now hit double-digit three-pointers in each of their last four games.
