NMSU men’s basketball team learns fate on Selection Sunday

The NMSU men’s basketball team learned Sunday that they will play Auburn on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah in their NCAA Tournament opener. The game is set to air at 11:30 a.m. MT on TNT.

The Aggies clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a win in the WAC Tournament Championship Saturday night against Grand Canyon.

The Aggies blew out GCU, 89-57, to secure their ticket to the Big Dance and notch their 30th overall win on the year (30-4).

NMSU has now won 19 consecutive games entering the NCAA Tournament. That is the second longest active win streak in the nation, trailing only Wofford’s 20-game streak.

NMSU’s 30 wins this season set a new program record, surpassing the previous record of 28, which was set in each of the previous two seasons.

Last season, the Aggies were a 12-seed in the Big Dance but lost to Clemson in their opener.

The NMSU women’s team also clinched a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Saturday with a 76-73 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley in double overtime. They will learn their opponent and destination on Monday.
