The NMSU lady Aggies battled the UTRGV Vaqueros for the WAC title

The lady Aggies took on the UTRGV Vaqueros in a double overtime thriller.

The first two minutes of the game were all Brooke Salas as she scored 9 points with in that time.

In the second quarter the Vaqueros went on a 10-2 run retaking the lead at 25.

UTRGV then scored four straight to end the half up 36 to 35.

Salas and Gia Pack scored 9 points in the first two minutes of the second half.

That gave the Aggies a 44-42 lead in the third quarter.

The Vaqueros though put up nine of the last 11 points ending the quarter 51 to 46 and with the lead.

Stabresa McDaniel tied the game at 58 in the fourth quarter for NMSU with a transition bucket leaving 1:45 on the clock.

The game would head to overtime.

Both teams were exhausted, not scoring a single point until a GCU free throw with three minutes remaining in bonus ball.

A minute and a half left in the contest and Rio Grande Valley went up two points.

Salas though willed her team into another overtime period with a difficult lay in leaving 24 seconds on the clock.

13 seconds left in the second over time, Gia Pack missed a shot but Brooke Salas had her back and grabbed the rebound. Then put it in to give NMSU a 74 to 72 point lead.

UTRGV tried to get off a last second shot but couldn’t get down the court in time before the buzzer went off.

The NMSU Lady Aggies took the WAC title in dramatic fashion winning 76 to 73.

Coach Brooke Atkinson said after the game, That just goes to show you what they’re made of, resiliency, no quit, exactly what they showed you. They deserved this and I couldn’t be prouder. “

The team has their watch party Monday at 5PM in the Barbara Hubbard room on campus.
