Mass to be held for Gadsden baseball player killed in hit-and-run

A celebration of life mass will be held on Tuesday to honor the life of Adalberto Romero, the Gadsden High School baseball player who was killed in a hit-and-run last week.

The mass will be at La Paz Church in Las Cruces at 5 p.m.

Romero will be laid to rest Wednesday morning.

According to police documents 16-year-old Romero was struck and killed by 21-year-old Oscar Ivan Anchondo as he was getting into his family’s car to drive to school on Wednesday morning.

Anchondo will appear in court on Tuesday. He is charged with Vehicular Homicide, Tampering with Evidence, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, driving without a license and driving without liability insurance.

ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom will be in the Dona Ana County Third Judicial Court for Anchondo’s detention hearing.

A Go Fund Me Account has been set up to help Romero’s family with funeral expenses. The account has already well surpassed its initial goal, and collected more than $17,000 as of Tuesday morning.
