Kentucky Derby post positions drawn – Sunland Derby winner gets post 10

The 145th Kentucky Derby is stil a few days away, but there was some important business to handle Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s Run for the Roses.

The official post positions were drawn Tuesday, determining the starting gate for each horse.

The various positions have historically held some significance when it comes to determining the winner.

For instance, gate 17 has never produced a winner going back to the very first use of starting gates in 1930, according to state provided by Newsday.com.

Additionally, the fifth gate has produced the most winners with ten total while the tenth post is right behind it with nine total winners.

As fate would have it, the 2019 Sunland Derby winner, Cutting Humor, was given the tenth gate.

The current favorite, as of Tuesday afternoon was Omaha Beach (4/1), who will begin the race at Churchill Downs in gate 12, which has only produced three winners since 1930.

Cutting Humor had 30/1 odds, according to various books, as of Tuesday. The horse set a new track record at Sunland Park in March but is not among the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

Of course, Cutting Humor will be chasing the legendary Mine That Bird, who finished fourth at the Sunland Derby only to defy 50/1 odds and win the 2009 Kentucky Derby in one of the great upsets in sports history.
