At least 1 dead, several hurt as military truck, minivan collide head-on near Chaparral

A head-on crash between a minivan and a military vehicle left at least one person dead and several others seriously injured, authorities said.

The deadly collision occurred along State Highway 213 near Chaparral on Friday morning when the minivan crossed over the center line into the path of an eight-wheel military truck, according to an eyewitness who spoke with ABC-7 after being interviewed by police.

The driver of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an officer on site.

New Mexico State Police shut down both lanes of the highway from milepost 0 to 1 due to the crash. It finally reopened about 8 p.m. after all the wreckage was removed.

Military officials were at the scene along with state police investigators, who utilized a drone in their crash reconstruction efforts.

A spokesman for Fort Bliss said the military vehicle contained soldiers from a New Mexico National Guard unit based in Las Cruces, but he did not provide any details on injured personnel.
