Guatemalan woman drowns in American Canal along Border Highway

A Guatemalan migrant drowned in a canal in the Lower Valley near the border late Monday night, police said Tuesday.

Fire crews pulled the unresponsive woman from the American Canal at Border Highway and Yarbrough about 11 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from a man who said “she was swept away by the current as they were crossing the canal,” authorities indicated.

Crews performed CPR and revived the woman, according to the fire department. But police said she later died at University Medical Center.

The man suffered minor water inhalation and was expected to be ok, according to a fire department spokesman.
