I-10 Connect Project will close…

If you travel to Juarez for business or fun, how you get there will dramatically change beginning this Sunday.

The I-10 Connect project is building ramps over Interstate 10 at the interchange with U.S. 54 (the Spaghetti Bowl) that will specifically direct traffic to Juarez. But the current ramps to Juarez will close in order to complete the project.

The first closure is the I-10 West off-ramp to Juarez. It will close this Sunday at 9 p.m. and remain closed for 9 months.

Sunday night and Monday, traffic will detour via Paisano. After that, traffic will detour on northbound U.S. 54 to the Pershing turnaround. The change is necessary so crews can set barriers on the first two days of the closure.

The ramp from I-10 East into Juárez won’t close immediately, that will happen in a couple of weeks. Once that ramp does close transportation officials recommend the same detour: up and down U.S. 54.

“This is going to be super important going forward and I-10 is in need of repair, so when we need to get traffic off of I-10 seamlessly this is gonna be a big boon. It’s also gonna help because it’s going to separate out southbound traffic to Juarez from traffic that just wants to go to Paisano or to Loop 375,” said Jennifer Wright of the Texas Dept. of Transportation.

She said officials know this will be an inconvenience for motorists

“There’s gotta be pain before there’s a gain, I guess has to be said. You have to understand that it is a complicated project, and we’re making the most out of existing assets that we have there, so we are connecting rampings instead of demolishing complete ramps – we’re actually making connections,” Wright said.

The Texas Dept. of Transportation recently launched text message alerts in English and Spanish for major closures. Click here to sign up for those alerts.
