Bicyclist struck, killed by SUV in hit-and-run in El Paso’s Lower Valley

A bicyclist was struck and killed early Wednesday by a speeding SUV that fled the scene in the city’s Lower Valley, police said.

The deadly hit-and-run happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 7900 block of Alameda Avenue near the intersection of Fresno Drive.

Police identified the victim as 59-year-old Hector Leyva. Investigators said he was riding his bicycle when a dark colored SUV struck him from behind.

The driver of the SUV, who investigators described as a Hispanic man in his late 20’s or early 30’s, reportedly fled south on Fresno at a high rate of speed.

Leyva was rushed after being hit to Del Sol Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Police asked that anyone with information about the hit-and-run contact EPPD’s Special Traffic Investigators unit at (915) 212-4080 or Crime Stoppers at (915) 566-8477.
