Man seriously wounded in Deming shooting flown to UMC El Paso; no arrests yet made

A 49-year-old man was shot and wounded outside Deming Tuesday evening, suffering serious injuries that required him to be flown to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment.

Officials with the Luna County Sheriff’s Office said Joe Melendez of Deming was apparently shot and wounded during some type of altercation north of the city off of Keeler Farm Road.

Capt. Jose Martinez said Melendez was dropped off at Mimbres Hospital in Deming with a gunshot wound to the stomach following the incident, and from there was taken by helicopter to El Paso.

No arrests had yet been made in the shooting, but deputies said they were working on leads in their “ongoing investigation.”
