El Paso VA receives recognition that could improve access to mental health care

The Psychology Internship Program at the El Paso VA Health Care System (EPVAHCS) has been awarded accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA), a recognition that to date has only been attained by one other internship site in El Paso.

El Paso VA health officials say it could lead to timelier access to mental health care for veterans in the area.

“We are committed to providing the best mental health care to our Veterans and this recognition will enhance our ability to do that. Having an accredited internship program will strengthen our efforts to recruit highly trained psychologists who want to work at the El Paso VA. I expect the number of applicants to more than quadruple this coming fall as we look to fill our positions. In turn this will allow Veterans to receive quality mental health treatment in a much timelier manner” said Emilia Campos, Ph.D., Deputy Chief and Psychology Training Director for the El Paso VA Health Care System Mental Health Department.

EPVAHCS has been working towards this goal for over a year and a half.
