Christmas shoppers brave long lines and heavy traffic

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - The holiday shopping rush continues for folks in the Borderland and the race against the clock is officially on. With less than 48 hours left before Christmas, malls are at capacity and patience is running low for shoppers.

"Its pretty crazy, I got busy with work over the weekend so (I) decided to come today and it's packed," said one shopper.

The big chain stores around town tend to be the most packed but local shops are cashing in as well. The line outside Tamales Lupita in Canutillo early Monday extended well past the parking lot. Workers there have grown accustomed to the rush as it is one of the busiest times of the year for them.

El Paso chocolate boutique Chocolat has been operating at full speed since October. They officially ran out of corporate gift basket orders back in July. While they may no longer be taking orders for more baskets, they're willing to work with local shoppers.

"The situation is reversed, in other words, when people come in here with time they have a choice of many, many things and I can tailor-make anything they desire. When they come in last minute, I bring out whatever we have out of the kitchen which is always delicious so they kind of take what we have," Chocolat owner Leigh Kersh said as she wrapped blue ribbons around dozens of gift baskets.

ABC-7 asked last-minute shoppers for advice for anyone in their position and most of them agreed: the best course of action is to pack your patience and brave through the rush.
