Community Champions: Eastwood girls wrestling team headed to UIL State Tournament

EL PASO, Texas -- The Eastwood Troopers have done all the right things to get this point.

First, win a district title, then a regional title, and now all that's left to do is bring home a state championship.

The Troopers will have that opportunity as they head to Houston to compete in the UIL State Wrestling Tournament.

Last weekend, the Eastwood girls wrestling team finished in first place at the regional competition.

It was a tough road to get to that first place podium as they had to compete against last year's state champion, the Hanks Knights.

Hanks had won 6 straight state titles in wrestling as a team, and they were looking to get back to the state competition to defend their title, but the Troopers had plans of their own.

Eastwood would finish in first place, while Hanks finished second.

Along with the team qualifying for state, 4 wrestlers for the Troopers won individual championships in their weight class.

For their accomplishments, the Eastwood girls wrestling team are this week's Community Champions sponsored by Albertson's and the El Paso Community Foundation.
