Sunland Park abortion clinic prepares for changes to law

SUNLAND PARK, New Mexico- After the overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the United States Supreme Court and the temporary restraining order issued by a Texas Judge, the Women’s Reproduction Clinic in Sunland Park is ready for more patients.

Dr. Franz Theard has been performing abortions for almost two decades at the clinic.

He says people have been coming to his clinic from all over the country.

“We have had them come from Shreveport, Oklahoma is now closed. We are probably going to start getting them from Oklahoma which is also thinking of closing though there has been no problem crossing,” shared the doctor.

Dr. Theard thinks New Mexico patients are lucky saying, “It's an inconvenience, some of them are very angry about having to do this but I think they still consider themselves lucky to be able to have a state nearby that can help them.”

Clinic staff told ABC-7 that they take around 300 calls a week and that the procedure to take the pill that terminates the pregnancy costs around $700.
