GoFundMe set up for El Paso man injured in bicycle accident; he’s been unconscious for almost a month

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – An El Paso man was seriously injured while riding his motorized bicycle and struck a car almost a month ago. He hasn’t woken up since.

Gustavo Orta Ruelas suffered severe head trauma when the accident happened on March 10. He has been in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit since it happened.

A police report from his family states a driver heard something collide with the passenger side of his vehicle but didn’t see anything when he looked around.

The driver said he arrived at work and noticed the car was damaged, so he contacted police and told officers he was involved in an accident and believed something collided with his vehicle, according to the report.

Police said the driver was not cited. The report states there were no witnesses.

Ruelas' family disputes the account provided by officers, "you cannot tell me you hit a 200-pound man on a bicycle, and you did not see him," said Ruelas' wife.

She asks anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the hospital’s bills. Click here if you'd like to donate.

Gustavo has a daughter and a wife.
