Proposition I – what is it?

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- With early voting starting Monday, El Pasoans may be feeling overwhelmed by the amount of propositions on the ballot.

There are 11 propositions, covering a variety of topics that include leases, staffing, petition processes, and much more. One of those propositions - Prop I - concerns El Paso firefighters and police officers and their pension fund.

The City has had an 18% cap on contributions to participants of the fund since 1968.

But El Paso fire officials said voting for Proposition I wouldn't just benefit participants of the pension fund.

"The city will be able to get a lower interest rate in the future when it finances projects like streets, parks and libraries," said Lieutenant Paul Thompson, President of Local 51, which represents El Paso firefighters. "It will save money for taxpayers and the city of El Paso."

Several El Pasoans told ABC-7 they would vote for the proposition, but one woman who did not want to be identified said she would not because she would want to know where the money was coming from.
