El Paso Rep. Trejo recall petition signatures turned in to City Hall
UPDATE (Aug. 14, 2026): A petition to recall El Paso City Representative Cynthia Boyar Trejo has been turned in to City Hall Friday, according to Josh Dagda, who led the petition.
Volunteers gathered signatures since June 17 and submitted more than 1,000. They're looking to recall Rep. Trejo over her decision to vote against canceling the 380 agreement the city has with Meta for the Northeast data center.
A 380 agreement is a legal contract between a city and a private business. One of the things it does is incentivize developers to build a project in a specific city so they have the opportunity for economic growth.
The city has a law that petitioners need more than 4,000 signatures to recall her, but volunteers argued it should be less.
Dagda said he wants a fair resolution.
"They did not feel heard, so we wanted to do something about it," Dagda said.
ABC-7 reached out to the City of El Paso for comment. It sent the following statement.
The City Clerk’s Office did receive the recall petition and signatures today and the Clerk’s Office now has up to 10 calendar days to validate the signatures. If the petition is sufficient, it will be submitted to City Council, which must order a recall election if the representative does not resign. If the petition is insufficient, the organizers will have 10 calendar days to amend it, followed by another 10-day review period.
If the petition is valid, it will be submitted to the El Paso City Council, which would order a recall election if Rep. Trejo doesn't resign.
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- This morning Joshua Dagda and local residents gathered outside of City Hall to address concerns over data centers coming to Texas. Dagda filed a Petition for Writ of Mandamus against El Paso Representative Cynthia Boyar Trejo. She represents District 4.
As representatives continue to adress concerns, Dagda's group is collecting signatures for the recall process and turning to the court system to halt municipal approvals.
The controversy has led to communities now trying to recall elected officials. Dagda's group hopes collecting signatures will remove leaders from office. Dagda demands an immediate pause on new developments until comprehensive environmental and infrastructure audits are conducted.
Today, outside of City Hall, anti-data center organizers gathered to rally and announce their latest legal filing. Demonstrators voiced outrage over lack of transparency and a failure by local leadership to adequately evaluate the long-term effects on resources and the environment.
