Zoo reopened after temporary closure caused by Friday’s storm

UPDATE (8/9/26) -- A spokesman from the City of El Paso has confirmed to ABC-7 that the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens has reopened.

This comes after the zoo was closed as crews worked to remove downed trees and debris, and El Paso Electric replaced damaged utility poles in the zoo caused by a storm Friday night.

The zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UPDATE (2:26 PM) -- The City of El Paso has shared images showing the damage around the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Officials say crews with El Paso Zoo and El Paso Electric are working to clear debris and repair any damage that was caused by the Friday's storm, closing the zoo for the day.

UPDATE (11:24 AM) -- El Paso Electric has confirmed to ABC-7 that four wooden utility poles were damaged by the storms the city faced overnight.

According to a spokesperson with El Paso Electric, the wooden "structures" would be replaced by steel poles and replacement should be completed by Saturday evening.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens announced Saturday morning that the facility is temporarily closed following damage caused by a overnight thunderstorm that moved through the area.

According to officials, strong winds and severe weather caused several trees to fall throughout the Zoo grounds and damaged power lines.

Zoo officials say that no animals or staff were injured.

The Zoo is closed for guests as crews assess the damage, remove debris, and make any repairs caused by the storm. The facility is currently scheduled to reopen to the public on Sunday during its normal hours of operation, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
