Bear bites man in New Mexico

CEDAR CREST, N.M. (KVIA) -- A bear bit a man while he walked his dogs near Cedar Crest, New Mexico, the state wildlife department said Wednesday.

The bear's bite caused non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The New Mexico Department of Wildlife officers are investigating the bite and secured the area, it said. Cedar Crest is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area.

In light of the encounter, the department warned the public to "bear aware" while exploring wildlife habitats. While encounters can happen unexpectedly, the department said knowing how to react is critical.

The department urged those to take the following action when encountering a bear:

• Remain calm and leave the area. Do not panic or make sudden movements.
• Back away slowly. Stop and back away while keeping your eyes on the bear. Do not run, as running can trigger a bear's natural instinct to chase and attack.
• Make yourself look large. Raise your arms, open your jacket, and stand tall to appear as intimidating as possible.
• Do not approach. Never attempt to get closer to a bear for any reason. If you see cubs nearby, exercise extreme caution and ensure you do not get between them and their mother, who will act aggressively to defend them.
• Fight back if attacked. If the bear becomes aggressive or charges, do not play dead. Arm yourself with a large stick and use any weapon available. Throw rocks, use a backpack, a hat, a jacket, or your bare hands if necessary to fight off the animal.
