Container ship hits bridge in south China, killing 5 and knocking section of roadway into the water

BEIJING (AP) — Five people are dead after a massive container ship hit a bridge south of the city of Guangzhou in southern China early Thursday, sending a section of the roadway crashing down, Three small trucks, the minibus and a scooter fell off the Lixinsha Bridge about 5:30 a.m., authorities said. The minibus, the scooter and one of the trucks landed on the ship, and the other two trucks fell into the water. The bridge collapse also cut off water and access to an island that is home to about 8,000 people. Temporary water lines and a ferry service were set up for residents.
