El Paso City Council approves resolution supporting police reforms
EL PASO, Texas -- The city of El Paso is taking steps to encourage reforms at the El Paso Police Department.
After national and local calls for police reform, El Paso City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed the "'El Paso Strong' resolution which seeks to encourage the elimination of racial disparities and improve law enforcement interactions."
The city is implementing a new recruitment and hiring process, creating a civilian-involved discipline review board and shooting review team.
City officials also want to institute new training for de-escalation techniques and create a critical incident team for independent investigation of officer-involved shootings.
Council members, before voting to approve the resolution supporting the changes, emphasized that their action should not be viewed as an attack on police.
