Arrest made in deadly New Mexico crash

OTERO COUNTY, N.M. (KVIA) -- A 58-year-old man from Hobbs, New Mexico, has been arrested for allegedly causing a deadly crash.

It happened in Mayhill, which is about a 20-minute drive from Cloudcroft.

According to the Otero County Sheriff's Office, on June 5, Terry Godwin drove recklessly on U.S. Highway 82 westbound. He allegedly crossed into the eastbound lanes and crashed head-on with a car.

The sheriff's office said the car's driver died at the scene.

Investigators determined Godwin allegedly had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.19 and drove 70-75 miles per hour. The speed limit was 35 mph, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Godwin on charges of homicide by vehicle, aggravated DWI second offense, reckless driving, possession of an open container and failure to wear a seatbelt.

On Aug. 14, the Lea County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division and Lea County Drug Task Force arrested Godwin at his home in Hobbs. He was booked into the Lea County Detention Center pending court proceedings and return to Otero County.
