Texas teen arrested for alleged plot to assassinate congressman

MGN

AUSTIN (KVIA) -- A 17-year-old from Texas was arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate a congressman and commit a terrorist attack, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Thursday.

Gov. Abbott said the teen is from McKinney, Texas, which is near Dallas. The governor didn't share any information about the teen's identity.

The teen allegedly had a plot to assassinate U.S. Representative Keith Self and commit a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. Authorities arrested him on Oct. 5. Rep. Self serves the third congressional district of Texas.

“The FBI stopped this radical Islamic terrorist before he could strike,” said Gov. Abbott in a statement. “Radical Islamic terrorism has no place in Texas. We will combat radical Islam in all forms and eliminate every threat it poses.”

The teen is still in federal custody. The Texas Department of Public Safety will work with federal law enforcement on the situation, according to the governor.
