El Paso County schools receive accountability ratings

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Texas public schools and districts got their state accountability ratings Friday, which rates campuses on an A-F scale based on the schools and districts' performances.
"A-F Ratings provide clear, accessible information on school and district performance, serving as an essential tool for parents, educators, policymakers and local communities to make informed decisions that support student success," the TEA said in a statement.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) oversees the ratings. It said 85% of campuses that received an A-F rating statewide achieved acceptable academic performance (C or above).
The majority of district ratings fell within the B range (80-89), according to the TEA.
Within El Paso County, Valle Verde Early College High School received the highest rating: a 98 out of 100, according to the TEA's rating map.
One Middle School, Guillen Middle School improved their rating of an F to a B. They celebrated their new rating with a school wide assembly, with confetti, live music from their very own student mariachi band, they showcased their wide array of extra circulars, and played games with both students and teachers.
"We are really big on the Positive Behavior Intervention System and support. So from how they walk in the school to the language, how we address the students and address them positively, instead of telling them, don't do this, we say, this is how we're supposed to, and to always say thank you and please." Said Assistant Principal Susana Hernandez.
When ABC-7 asked Hernandez what she thinks helped improve the school's accountability rating she answered with;
"Everything is because of what the teachers are doing. And we have an amazing leader who knew exactly where to place our teachers. And our teachers - are not new. They're veterans. They're extremely well. They know exactly what they're doing. I think they've worked a little bit with students in this population. And so they bring that background with them so they know exactly how to help."
El Paso Leadership Academy High School on Joe Battle Boulevard received the lowest score: a 59 out of 100. Logan Elementary School in Northeast El Paso received the same score.
Ysleta Independent School District had the most A-rated campuses, according to TEA, totaling 25. Socorro Independent School District trailed behind with 18.
