Sun Metro canceling Sunday service on some routes to support two new Brio systems

Sun Metro bus riders can expect changes to their Sunday routes all thanks to adjustments being made to support two new Brio systems.

ABC-7 spoke with a few bus riders who were not too happy about these changes.

“Yea its gonna effect me. That’s the only way I can get to work is through the bus route,” said Kenneth Murry, a regular Sun Metro bus rider.

His regular route to work is one of the 26 routes that will be eliminated on Sunday.

The routes that will be eliminated include the following:

3, 10, 11, 13, 16, 17, 19, 20, 24, 25, 30, 32, 33, 36, 40, 42, 43, 45, 52, 55, 58, 60, 71, 72, 73 and 74.

“On a Sunday you have people that do shopping or do whatever they need to do so it’ll take make an impact I think,” said Sun Metro bus rider Ray Velez.

Jay Banasiak, Sun Metro Director, said the 26 canceled routes were chosen based on ridership criteria.

“The routes that we actually are cutting we’re only cutting because we were only averaging 2 to 8 or 9 passengers an hour and there weren’t that many people using that service to begin with,” said Banasiak.

Another reason to cancel these routes is to help support two new Brio systems that will be located on Alameda and Dyer.

“It’s certainly an efficiency issue. We can’t really afford to provide anymore. Particularly when we have the Brios coming on board which are offering much improved services,” said Banasiak.

Those improved services include new information TV monitors, phone charging portals, WiFi and bike racks located inside of the Brios.

To boost community awareness about the changes, Sun Metro will have information booths at all transit centers and will host two community meetings.

Community Meeting Dates: September 17 at 6 p.m. at the Northgate Transit Center, 9347 Diana Drive September 18 at 6 p.m. at the Mission Valley Transit Center, 9065 Dyer
